FAQs

Whether you’re a hobby gardener or a professional farmer, worms and worm castings are powerful resources for organic growing. Below you’ll find answers for some of the common questions we receive about our products and how to use them.

If you have a question that isn’t addressed below, please get in touch… and we’ll do our best to provide an answer.

What is the best way to use worms?
Worms can be used for composting and gardening. Check out our post on how to use earthworms for composting and gardening.
How should I use worm cocoons?
Check out our post on worm cocoon applications and uses.
What are worm castings?
Worm castings are the output from an earthworm’s digestive tract, and they are Mother Nature’s purest form of slow-release natural organic plant food. Simply put, earthworm castings are worm poop – the result of worms ingesting, breaking down and decomposing organic matter.

Worm castings are also called:

  • Vermicast
  • Worm poop
  • Worm manure
  • Worm humus
How should I use worm castings?
There a many ways to use worm castings, including as an all-natural plant food and compost fortifier. Check out our post on how to use worm castings.
What is the best way to store excess worm castings?
Worm castings can last up to 6 months – and sometimes longer – depending on the method of storage. Keeping them out of UV light (e.g. the sun and some grow lights) and at a stable temperature helps them last longer. We recommend storage at a temperature in the 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit range to help prolong the shelf life of your worm castings.
Are worm castings toxic to dogs, cats and other household pets?
Worm castings are non-toxic, and while we don’t recommend eating them, they will not cause harm to people or pets. In fact, hermit crabs eat worm castings and are fed to them as a treat.
Where can I buy Rocky Mountain Organic Supply organic worm castings?
We sell our worm castings, African nightcrawlers and worm cocoons exclusively through our online store or directly at our Worm Farm, which is located here:

411-A Tia Juana Street
Colorado Springs, CO 80909

How long do worm castings last?
Worm castings can last up to 6 months – and sometimes longer – depending on the method of storage.
Is it safe to store worm castings in the freezer?
Worm castings should never be frozen or stored in the freezer. Freezing worm castings will kill off most the larger lifeforms and cause the rest to go dormant.
How should worm castings be stored?
Worm castings should be stored at a temperature in the 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit range, and inside either our bags or a 5-gallon bucket with a lid; do not use a bucket with a gasket that causes it to become airtight. We use Home Depot buckets for storage at the worm farm, but any bucket and lid combo will do.

Helpful tip from Jay: If the bucket has a gasket lid, you can drill several 1/8″ holes around the top to allow air to enter and be exchanged with the microbiology alive in the bucket.

How does shipping work for worms and worm eggs/cocoons?
Worms are shipped every Monday or Tuesday, depending on holidays and weather. All orders must be paid for and processed by Saturday to ensure prompt shipping.

As worms are living creatures, we do everything within our power to ensure safe travel to their destination. This includes holding orders during periods of bad weather (hot and cold).

We conditionally guarantee Live Delivery in the continental USA only. For the Live Guarantee to be valid, the worms must be accepted on the first delivery attempt.

Please visit our Shipping Terms & Conditions for more information on worm shipments.

How does shipping work for worm castings?
As worm castings are a living product, we try to ensure their arrival at your door as quickly as possible to avoid damage from excessive heat or extreme cold. We prefer to ship during the week when the worm castings have the best chance to arrive before Sunday to avoid spending the weekend in limbo at the post office or FedEx warehouse. This means we typically ship on Monday and Tuesday only, depending on the distance from us to you and the estimated shipping time.

It is our goal to get the freshest product possible into your hands with the shortest reasonable transit time to give you the best experience with our worm castings and the amazing microbial life they bring to your soil and plants.

Please visit our Shipping Terms & Conditions for more information on shipments of worm castings.
