How to use Earthworms for composting and gardening

Worms. Worms? Oh Yeah, Earthworms!

If you’re reading this, then chances are good that you’ve seen an earthworm or two in your lifetime. Chances are even better that you’re like the rest of us and didn’t think about just how incredibly awesome worms really are!

What Are Earthworms?

Worms are one of “Mother Nature’s best kept gardening secrets”. Believe it or not, Earthworms are classified as animals; they belong to the kingdom Animalia.

These fascinating sub-terrestrial creatures are responsible for some pretty remarkable processes happening underground. The earth, and all life as we know it would be quite different without our wiggly little friends.

Worms Make Your Life Easier

Without earthworms, soil nutrients wouldn’t be as readily available for plants to flourish and thrive. In return, your crops would lack opportunities for achieving their full biological growth potential. For some, it may not be so bad; could just mean fewer tomatoes for homemade salsa or your grandma’s spaghetti sauce. Others could find this more stressful as it may mean smaller yields and thinned profit margins come weigh day.

Rocky Mountain Worm Company has African Nightcrawlers for sale! These nightcrawlers are ideal composting worms if you’d like to quickly and easily decompose larger amounts of household food scraps. They also make excellent garden worms as they will improve the overall health of your garden soil ecosystem.

Benefits of Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is composting with earthworms. Chances are pretty good that if you’re not using worms for composting, then you’re missing out on the potential for more nutrient dense compost matter. We highly recommend adding worms to your compost bin for the following reasons:

  • African Nightcrawlers work top to bottom inside a compost pile ensuring plenty of oxygen and turning takes place for proper decomposition
  • As compost breaks down, worms provide the finishing touches by turning it into super humus full of microbiology and plant ready nutrients
  • Worms speed up the composting process immensely, shaving months off the breakdown process and providing you with finished compost sooner

Psst…Here’s a list of safe items to feed compost and garden worms: what do worms eat? | Unsafe items to eat: what not to feed worms.

FAQ about Gardening and Composting with Worms

More FAQs about worms.

How Many Worms Do I Need?

To safely introduce and maximize a healthy worm count, we recommend buying 1 pound of worms for every 25 cubic feet of soil (or about 1 yard of soil).

Rectangle/Square
V = Length x Width x Depth (or Height)

Circle
V = Diameter x Depth

Triangle
V = Side #1 x Side #2 x Side #3 x Depth

Calculate soil volume (Volume for circle) by using the formula that best describes the shape of your garden/grow space.

NOTE: Be sure to maintain the same units throughout all of your measurements and calculations.

What Earthworms are best for Composting/Gardening?

Our specialty is African Nightcrawlers. We believe that they are the “best” worm.
